Community Action on Natural Resource Management for Decent Living (CANDL-1):

Trinamul Unnayan Sangstha (TUS) implemented the Community Action on Natural Resource Management for Decent Living (CANDL-1) project from January 1, 2009 to July 31, 2013, supported by Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF) and funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). 
The project was implemented across Khagrachari Sadar and Panchari Upazilas. 
Major activities included increasing agricultural production and promoting agro-forestry through community nurseries, banana cultivation, mushroom growing, handloom and handicrafts production; strengthening community capacity via meetings, workshops, and entrepreneurship development; enhancing income generation by providing technical training on agro-business and food processing 
(e.g., banana chips, pickles, jam, jelly); enriching and restoring natural resource management (NRM) practices such as stream-side bamboo plantations and stream management; and strengthening market linkages and collaboration with government line departments.

Project Purpose
  • To strengthen local communities’ control over land and resources by creating livelihood opportunities.
  • CANDL worked with poor communities rich in natural resources but limited in employment opportunities, focusing especially on youth and women with fewer income-generating options.
